West Ham manager Graham Potter has opened up about his experience after being sacked by Chelsea in April 2023.
In an interview with Football Focus, Potter admitted that he “wasn’t in a good place” following his dismissal, which came less than seven months after he replaced Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.
Potter, who returned to coaching after a 20-month hiatus to take the helm at West Ham in January, described the Chelsea sacking as a “tough moment.” During his time at Chelsea, he won only 12 of 31 games in all competitions, despite the club spending over £550m on new players.
Reflecting on the experience, Potter offered advice to his past self: “Everything will be OK. I think it makes you better, it makes you a stronger person, it makes you a better coach.” He added, “The worst that can happen is you can lose your job and you can still be alright, you can still move forward, still have something to offer, still grow as a person. That bubble we’re in, it can be a little too far down the rabbit hole. Be grateful for the good and the bad, just deal with it.” He emphasized that the experience ultimately made him a stronger person.
