Warning to Police Commander: Stop Being an Agent of Anti-Development and Peace in Our Town – Seniagya Youth

Seniagya Youth Call on IGP and Regional Authorities to Address Police Commander's Alleged Interference in Community Development Efforts

Story Highlights
  • Seniagya Youth accuse ASP Osei Yeboah of aligning with one side in a chieftaincy dispute
  • The Police Commander allegedly blocked past and current efforts to raise funds for critical projects like a Senior High School
  • The youth call on the IGP, Ashanti Regional Security Council, and Asantehene to intervene

The youth of Seniagya, a prominent community in the Sekyere East District of the Ashanti Region, is calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take strong action against the District Commander of the Ghana Police Service in the area, ASP Osei Yeboah, for his deliberate efforts to hinder the progress of the community.

The youth group, which comprises indigenes from Seniagya, other parts of the country, and the diaspora, accuses the District Police Commander of impeding their efforts to develop the community.

The youth claim that the Police Commander’s actions and inactions are driven by personal interests, which conflict with the needs of the people.

In a press conference held in Seniagya, the youth explained their confusion over why ASP Osei Yeboah would vehemently oppose a fundraising program being organized to solicit funds for the construction of a Senior High School for the community.

According to the aggrieved youth, the fundraising program has been the main means of generating funds over the years, which have been used to build a health facility, undertake electrification projects, and fund other initiatives for the town.

However, the youth claim that the Police Commander, Mr. Osei Yeboah, threatened them and prevented the event from being held last year (2023). They further allege that he is now working to stop the program this year as well, without reasonable cause.

“We are organizing this fundraising event with our Assembly Member and Unit Committee to raise money for the construction of a Senior High School in our town. This is the method we have employed over the years to help develop our community.

But the Police Commander, repeating his actions from last year, is trying to stop this year’s fundraising event. We, the youth of Seniagya, will not allow any chieftaincy conflict to affect our program.

There is a longstanding chieftaincy dispute in our town, and it is widely known that the Police Commander, who is supposed to ensure peace and order in the community, has aligned himself with one side of the dispute.

In organizing this year’s fundraising event, the Seniagya Youth, being security-conscious, decided not to invite either party involved in the chieftaincy dispute. This was done to avoid any clashes between the parties or misunderstandings.

However, our Police Commander is instructing us to invite one of the chiefs in the dispute to our event, which is scheduled for Sunday, December 29, 2024.

What angers the youth is the Commander’s threat that if we do not invite the chief with whom he is aligned, he will prevent us from organizing the event, just as he did last year,” a leading member of the Seniagya Youth group explained.

In a strong warning to the District Commander, ASP Osei Yeboah, through the IGP, the youth of Seniagya urged the IGP to take swift action against the local commander, as he has become an obstacle to the efforts of the residents to develop their town.

The youth also demanded that the District Commander stop threatening to prevent them from organizing the fundraising program, or else face their wrath.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, and the Asantehene have been called upon by the group to warn the Police Commander of Sekyere East District to refrain from allowing his selfish interests to hinder the progress of Seniagya.

The Assembly Member for the Seniagya East Electoral Area, Mr. Abdul Razak Jibril, who addressed the press, stated that the youth do not understand the Police Commander’s actions.
