WAEC Delays 2024 WASSCE Results Due to GH₵25 Million Debt

Government's unpaid fees to WAEC halt essential repairs and result processing

Story Highlights
  • WAEC cites GH₵25 million debt as the main cause of the delay in releasing results
  • Technicians have suspended repairs of crucial grading scanners, halting the grading process
  • The Minority in Parliament demands immediate action from the Finance and Education Ministers to address the debt issue

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a delay in the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, citing financial challenges as the root cause.

In an interview on Thursday, December 19, John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, revealed that unresolved debts have prevented technicians from servicing essential equipment, notably the scanners used for grading objective questions.

“The results are not ready due to technical issues caused by the malfunctioning of specialized scanners, which we cannot repair because of the GH₵25 million owed to the technicians,” Kapi explained.

He further clarified that private schools have paid their fees, but public school candidates’ fees remain unpaid by the government, causing a halt in services.

The delay has drawn the attention of the Minority in Parliament, who have called for the Finance and Education Ministers to be summoned to address the ongoing financial issues and the government’s debt to WAEC.
