- Agyapong’s request for a mistrial was dismissed after the $18 million defamation verdict.
NPP stalwart Kennedy Agyapong has landed in Ghana following a heated legal battle with investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in the United States.
Last week, a U.S. court dismissed an application for a mistrial filed by Agyapong’s legal team after a jury ruled against him in the defamation case brought by Anas.
According to Evans Selasi Adika, a member of Anas’ legal team, Agyapong’s lawyers have made two post-verdict applications—one for remittitur (a request to reduce damages) and another for a mistrial.
The first motion, filed on March 13, sought to slash the $18 million damages awarded to Anas, arguing it was excessive and “shocked the judicial conscience.” However, the judge ruled that the issue was not properly presented before the court.
Despite the legal setbacks, Agyapong returned to Ghana to a hero’s welcome, as hundreds of his supporters thronged Kotoka International Airport to receive him.
