A massive fire has ravaged the central warehouse of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Tamale, destroying essential electrical materials, including numerous transformers and electric cables, resulting in losses estimated at several million Ghana cedis.

The fire, which broke out around 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2025, sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky, drawing the attention of residents and workers in the area.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Maxwell Kotoka, Corporate Communications Manager at NEDCo, confirmed that a substantial number of transformers and electrical installations were consumed by the fire. While the exact financial loss is yet to be determined, experts estimate it could run into millions of cedis due to the high cost of transformers and electrical materials.

“A significant number of transformers have been completely destroyed in the fire,” Mr. Kotoka said.

He, however, assured the public that no community would experience power outages due to the incident. “The affected area is only our warehouse, and for now, no community will be affected. It is only our warehouse that will remain without power,” he added.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Mr. Hudu Baba, stated that after receiving the distress call at around 2 p.m., firefighters responded swiftly and arrived in large numbers to combat the blaze.

“The only challenge we faced was a water shortage during the operation. However, we quickly contacted the Ghana Water Company, and they supplied us with water to continue fighting the fire,” he explained.

He added that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. “Our team has launched an investigation to assess whether negligence or an electrical fault played a role in the incident,” he noted.

Firefighters worked tirelessly for hours to bring the situation under control, preventing the flames from spreading to nearby structures, including offices and other essential electrical equipment.

Authorities have assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
