NPP youth activist accused of publishing false news after alleging misconduct by judges investigating Chief Justice’s removal

- Adenta Kumi granted bail after arrest for allegedly publishing false news
- He petitioned President Mahama to dissolve a committee probing the Chief Justice
- Kumi alleged judges met secretly with a petitioner’s lawyer, sparking public concern
Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi and a former parliamentary aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Adentan, has been granted bail after his arrest over claims made in a petition to President John Mahama.
Following his release, Kumi, accompanied by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, visited the NPP national headquarters in Accra, where they were warmly received by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua.
The arrest of Mr. Kumi stems from a petition he submitted to President Mahama, in which he called for the immediate dissolution of a committee investigating the removal of Ghana’s Chief Justice.
Kumi alleged that members of the committee—Justices Gabriel Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi—had engaged in conduct that could compromise the integrity of the inquiry.
According to the petition, the three justices were seen meeting with Thaddeus Sory, legal counsel for the petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area following the committee’s first hearing on May 15, 2025.
Kumi claimed that during this alleged dinner meeting, the judges were overheard discussing issues related to the petition.
A video purporting to show the meeting has since gone viral, stirring public debate and raising concerns about judicial impartiality.
However, the authenticity and context of the footage remain under scrutiny, with critics like lawyer Edudzi Tameklo publicly dismissing the recording’s credibility.
Kumi has been charged with publishing false news, a criminal offense under Ghanaian law.
His arrest has sparked debate within political and civil society circles about the balance between freedom of expression and the legal boundaries of public accusations.
During the visit to the NPP headquarters, the party leadership expressed solidarity with Kumi.
General Secretary Justin Kodua emphasized the importance of unity within the party, while Afenyo-Markin reiterated the need for due process and cautioned against prejudging the case.
As the legal proceedings continue, the NPP has pledged to monitor the situation closely and ensure that justice is served fairly.
