The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has named its newly constructed hostel in honor of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Running Mate for the 2024 elections, in recognition of his significant contributions to education in Ghana.

The naming ceremony took place on the university’s campus, celebrating Dr. Prempeh’s visionary leadership as Minister for Education and his crucial role in supporting infrastructure development at tertiary institutions.

During the event, Dr. Kofi Ohene Konadu, Chairman of the UPSA University Council, praised Dr. Prempeh for his outstanding contributions to the university’s growth.

He specifically noted Dr. Prempeh’s pivotal role in securing funding and facilitating the construction of the state-of-the-art facility, now named the “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Hostel.”

“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s time as Minister for Education was characterized by an unwavering commitment to expanding access to education and fostering a conducive learning environment. This hostel is a testament to his dedication to enhancing infrastructure in tertiary education,” Dr. Konadu stated.

The new hostel is designed to accommodate over 5,000 students, addressing accommodation shortages on campus and promoting an environment conducive to academic excellence.

Dr. Konadu emphasized the importance of effective leadership in achieving such accomplishments. “Your support for this project was not merely financial; it was about ensuring that institutions like UPSA could meet the increasing demand for quality education,” he added.

Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, Vice Chancellor of UPSA, echoed these sentiments, commending Dr. Prempeh’s lasting impact on Ghana’s education sector. “Dr. Prempeh’s influence on education in Ghana is profound. From implementing the Free Senior High School policy to improving infrastructure in institutions like ours, his leadership continues to change lives. Naming this hostel after him is our way of honoring his contributions,” said Professor Amartey.

This recognition comes three years after UPSA awarded Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in July 2021, celebrating his exceptional leadership and commitment to advancing education in the country.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Prempeh expressed heartfelt gratitude to UPSA for the honor. “This recognition is not just mine; it belongs to all who believe in the transformative power of education. I remain dedicated to supporting the growth of institutions like UPSA, which are vital to our national development,” he stated.

The naming of the hostel reinforces UPSA’s appreciation for Dr. Prempeh’s contributions and highlights the university’s commitment to honoring leaders who advocate for education.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, faculty, students, and representatives from various educational organizations, marking a significant milestone in the university’s history.
