U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Elon Musk to co-lead a newly established Department of Government Efficiency, aimed at streamlining federal operations and slashing unnecessary regulations.

Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, will join former Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy in driving large-scale reforms with an entrepreneurial approach.

The department, which will work outside the traditional government framework, is tasked with dismantling bureaucratic inefficiencies and restructuring federal agencies. The initiative is set to conclude by July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Musk’s appointment grants him significant influence over federal policies, further enhancing the market position of his companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and X.

While critics argue that Musk’s business record raises questions about his expertise in governance, Trump likens the project to the Manhattan Project, aiming for transparency and public engagement in cutting wasteful government spending.

The department’s acronym, DOGE, also nods to Musk’s support of dogecoin, with the billionaire promising that all actions will be posted online for public scrutiny.
