Ongoing search efforts highlight Tunisia’s growing role in Europe-bound migration as deadly crossings persist

- 29 survivors rescued by the Tunisian coast guard
- Tunisia now a major departure point for African migrants heading to Europe
At least eight African migrants have lost their lives after their boat capsized off the coast of Tunisia as it attempted the perilous journey to Europe, according to a security official speaking to Reuters.
The Tunisian coast guard managed to rescue 29 survivors from the waters near Abwabed, a coastal area close to Sfax—a well-known launch point for migrant crossings.
Authorities are continuing search operations to locate any individuals still missing, said Houssem Eddine Jebabli of the national guard.
Amid a growing migration crisis, Tunisia has emerged as a primary departure hub, surpassing Libya as the main exit point for migrants from across Africa in pursuit of safety and opportunity in Europe.
