Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged members of the judiciary to come together in solidarity as pressure mounts over the controversial suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking at the Supreme Court during the submission of a petition by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its affiliated groups, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need to protect the integrity of the judiciary amidst what he termed an alarming assault on its independence.

During the event, part of the ongoing “Save the Judiciary” protest on Monday, May 5, 2025, he warned that the Chief Justice’s suspension poses a serious threat to Ghana’s democratic fabric.

“We are witnessing an attack on the very backbone of our democracy,” he stated. “Targeting the Chief Justice based on what is clearly a baseless and politically motivated petition is not just unjust—it endangers the entire judicial system.”

He criticized the Council of State for its inaction and implored judges and court officials to rise above personal or political affiliations.

“Today it is Justice Torkornoo; tomorrow it could be any of you. The judiciary must not be reduced to a pawn in political games,” Afenyo-Markin cautioned.
