A devastating lightning strike during a heavy rainstorm has claimed the lives of four children and injured another in Sefwi Awaso, located in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of Ghana’s Western North Region.

The heartbreaking incident took place Monday evening at the Awaso GBC Compound as relentless rain battered the area. According to grieving family members, the children were playing outside amid the downpour when a sudden lightning bolt struck, sending shock and sorrow through the community.

Parents only realized the tragedy after hearing a loud crack and receiving the terrible news that their children had been struck by lightning. The entire Awaso community has been left shaken and mourning this unforeseen loss.

Kennedy Ayitey Wisdom, the Assemblyman for Awaso Electoral Area, visited the bereaved families to offer condolences and stressed the importance of caution during thunderstorms.

He urged parents to keep their children indoors and away from open spaces or electrical equipment during storms.

The surviving child is currently receiving medical care.

Meanwhile, the community is appealing to authorities for support and for the launch of public awareness campaigns on thunderstorm safety to prevent similar disasters in the future.
