Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), has dismissed the Minority MPs’ march to the Police Headquarters protesting the delay in the Ablekuma North election results as unnecessary and misguided.
In an interview on Thursday, June 5, Vanderpuye suggested the protest was more of a publicity stunt designed to attract media attention than a serious attempt to address the constitutional issue. He reminded that the Electoral Commission (EC), not the police, is the only authority legally empowered to declare election results.
He criticized the MPs for choosing to march to the Police Headquarters instead of engaging directly with the EC or pursuing legal avenues, implying their goal was more about creating a spectacle to gain sympathy than resolving the matter constructively.
“They just want to lose belly fat,” Vanderpuye quipped, implying that the protest served more as exercise than a necessary political action.
He questioned why the MPs petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) instead of addressing their concerns to the EC, stressing that the IGP is not involved in election administration. Vanderpuye advised that if the MPs believe the EC is failing in its duties, they should either petition the EC or take legal action through the courts to compel the commission to act.
