Key Decision Expected on Controversial Re-collation of Parliamentary Results

Story Highlights
  • The NDC opposes a High Court ruling directing the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate results in nine disputed constituencies
  • The EC has completed recollation in seven constituencies, with two still pending (Dome/Kwabenya and Ablekuma North)
  • The Supreme Court’s decision is expected to influence future electoral dispute resolutions in Ghana

The Supreme Court will today, Friday, December 27, hear an application for judicial review filed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NDC is contesting a December 20 High Court ruling that directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate parliamentary election results in nine disputed constituencies.

This ruling stemmed from a mandamus application by New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates in the affected areas.

The High Court instructed the EC to verify and re-collate results in line with its constitutional duties. The EC has since completed recollation in seven constituencies, with Dome/Kwabenya and Ablekuma North still pending.

The NDC, however, views the ruling and recollation as unconstitutional, arguing it undermines transparency, fairness, and electoral integrity. The party claims the High Court exceeded its jurisdiction in issuing the directive.

This case has attracted national attention, with the Supreme Court’s decision expected to set a precedent for resolving electoral disputes in Ghana.
