The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has officially declared an indefinite strike, effective today, in response to unresolved grievances regarding union representation on the governing councils of traditional public universities.

The announcement was made at a press conference held this morning, where union leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the recent decision to recognize the minority union, TEWU-TUC, as the representative body despite TEWU-GH’s majority status.

The strike follows a 7-day ultimatum issued on June 24, 2025, which expired without a satisfactory response from the relevant authorities.

TEWU-GH officials emphasized that their decision to strike is rooted in a commitment to uphold democratic principles and ensure fair representation for their members.

Charles Arthur, Chairman of the KNUST chapter of TEWU-GH, revealed to the media that their demands include: the immediate withdrawal of TEWU-TUC’s appointment as the workers’ representative on governing councils; an urgent directive for the Chief Labour Officer to conduct a verification process to determine the true majority union, as outlined in Labour Regulations 2007, L.I. 1833; and the establishment of a transparent and democratic process for determining union representation within tertiary education institutions.
