Ghana is gearing up to supercharge its economy with the launch of a bold new 24-hour operational policy.
Starting July 1, 2025, Tema and Takoradi ports will transition into fully round-the-clock hubs as part of the national 24-hour economy initiative, President John Dramani Mahama announced during the Ghana Horticulture Expo on June 11.
“We are rolling out a transformative strategy—the 24-hour economy—to unlock Ghana’s full production potential,” Mahama stated.
This policy is designed to drive up productivity and revenue by ensuring continuous operations in key sectors such as agribusiness and exports. The 24-hour service model is expected to revolutionize logistics and trade efficiency, particularly benefitting Ghana’s horticultural exports like pineapples, herbs, and vegetables, which require rapid transit to maintain freshness and reduce waste.
“The policy framework supports nonstop production, processing, and transportation,” Mahama said. “It’s about moving perishable goods quickly from farm to foreign markets, minimizing spoilage, and maximizing value.”
To bring this vision to life, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Agri-business, along with the Ministry of Transport, is collaborating with key institutions including the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ghana Shippers’ Council to ensure seamless 24-hour port operations.
