Teacher Sentenced After Fraudulent Withdrawal from Rural Bank Using Ghana Pay App

A 36-year-old teacher, John Ankomah Boateng, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labor after being found guilty of stealing from Bosomefreho Rural Bank Limited in the Ashanti Region.
Boateng, who is employed at Freso SDA Junior High School in the Bosomefreho District, pleaded guilty to the charge of theft.
The court, presided over by Judge Isaac Apietu, convicted him based on his own admission.
According to the prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum, the theft was reported by David Asare Atianeere, the internal auditor at Bosomefreho Rural Bank.
Between February 9 and February 26, 2024, Boateng fraudulently withdrew a total of GH¢238,550.99 using the Ghana Pay application, even though his account balance was only GH¢2.23.
The case was reported to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Ashanti South on February 28, 2024. Boateng was arrested on March 13, 2024.
In his caution statement, Boateng admitted to the crime and revealed that he transferred various amounts of stolen funds—GH¢10,000, GH¢5,000, GH¢20,000, and GH¢5,000—to individuals named Isaac Kwaku Duah and Neymar for safekeeping.
He also transferred GH¢40,000 to a travel agent to process travel documents for himself.
