Supreme Court Rejects Bid to Halt IGP, Security Chiefs’ Removal

Court Rules President’s Authority Remains Intact Amid Ongoing Constitutional Case

The Supreme Court has dismissed an injunction aimed at preventing President John Mahama from removing former Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare and other security agency heads.

A five-member panel, led by Justice Paul Baffoe Bonney, ruled on March 25, 2025, that the application for an interlocutory injunction does not impede the President’s authority to execute his administrative duties.

The application, filed by Imani Ghana and security expert Prof. Kwesi Aning, sought to block the replacement of security service heads until a final ruling on a constitutional interpretation case. The petitioners argued that dismissing these officials before the court’s decision would be unjust.

Meanwhile, the substantive case, which questions the President’s power to remove security agency heads without proven misconduct, remains pending. The Supreme Court is set to deliver its final ruling on May 7, 2025.
