Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for an end to derogatory remarks against the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, emphasizing his pivotal role in Ghana’s political history.

His remarks come in response to claims by Tamale Central MP, Murtala Mohammed, who allegedly labeled Dr. Danquah a “traitor” and “CIA operative” during parliamentary proceedings on February 4, 2025.

This prompted the Coalition for Youth Development in Okyeman to petition the Speaker of Parliament on March 7.

Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Remembrance Service at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kyebi on March 9, Akufo-Addo launched a collection of 60 commemorative statements celebrating Danquah’s contributions. He underscored Danquah’s unwavering advocacy for the rule of law as a pillar of liberty and individual freedom in Ghanaian politics.

“Despite JB Danquah’s immense contributions to Ghana’s development, his name continues to be embroiled in needless controversy, both in death as in life,” Akufo-Addo stated.

Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, delivering a speech on behalf of the Minority Caucus, also condemned the recent derogatory remarks and urged Ghanaians to prioritize unity over divisive rhetoric.

The Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, echoed similar sentiments, calling for the preservation of Danquah’s legacy and urging Ghanaians to honor his sacrifices rather than tarnish his name.

The event served as a platform for national figures to advocate for a more respectful and historically conscious political discourse.
