Sports Ministry Pays Tribute to Late Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju

Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, has conveyed his deep sorrow following the untimely death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.

The boxer tragically passed away after a light-heavyweight match against Ghanaian competitor Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

In an official statement issued on March 31, 2025, Adams expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Government of Ghana. He described Gabriel as a skilled and passionate athlete, noting that his loss is a profound blow to the boxing world.

“We share in the grief of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), the Nigerian boxing community, and the global boxing family,” said Adams. He highlighted that Gabriel’s tragic passing underscores the unpredictable risks inherent in the sport.

While awaiting an official medical report on the cause of death, Adams assured the public that the Ministry would fully cooperate with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) in conducting a thorough investigation.

He emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing athlete safety to prevent such incidents in the future.

Adams extended his thoughts and prayers to Gabriel’s family, friends, and teammates during this heartbreaking period, and called on the global boxing community to unite in celebrating Gabriel’s legacy and advocating for athlete welfare.

“May Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju’s soul rest in perfect peace,” Adams concluded.
