- Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu highlights that the Speaker’s decision has led to confusion and tension within the parliamentary system
Former Majority Leader Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has voiced strong opposition to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s recent decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
He refrained from commenting on Asawase MP Hon. Muntaka Mubarak’s claim that Bagbin is a tyrant, leaving it to the public to form their own opinions.
In an appearance on the Lawson TV/Radio Ghana Se Sen Morning Show, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu argued that Bagbin misinterpreted the ruling. He suggested that Bagbin had the potential to be an exemplary Speaker but squandered that opportunity.
“It’s unclear what the Speaker aimed to achieve with that ruling. When someone expresses intent to run as an independent candidate, they’re referring to the next parliament,” he remarked to host Kwame Tanko.
He emphasized that Bagbin’s ruling was misguided, prompting Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin to seek an urgent application at the Supreme Court.
Citing Article 97 Clause 1, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu pointed out that a Member of Parliament only vacates their seat if they switch parties or choose to remain independent after being elected.
He concluded that the confusion and tension currently plaguing Parliament stem directly from the Speaker’s controversial statements and decisions regarding the four MPs.
