Southampton suffered a predictable defeat against Manchester City, leaving them at the bottom of the Premier League with just one point from their first nine matches.

Despite leading the Saints back to the top flight only five months ago, manager Russell Martin is feeling the heat.

However, an interesting development occurred at the Etihad Stadium. Following Saturday’s 1-0 loss, both managers expressed admiration for the Southampton team.

While the defeat wasn’t entirely a matter of bad luck—Erling Haaland could have easily scored more than the match’s sole goal in the fifth minute—it highlighted Southampton’s resilience.

In a match characterized by open play, Southampton surprised many by controlling a significant portion of possession towards the end of the first half.

They finished with 42.3% possession, a stark contrast to Manchester City’s previous opponents, Sparta Prague and Wolves, who managed just 20.1% and 22.4%, respectively.

If Southampton faces relegation or if Martin loses his job, it will be due to his commitment to a philosophy he believes in. He reflected on his journey, recalling how he took over MK Dons when they were struggling in League One, with the chairman valuing vision over immediate results.

“There have been tough moments at MK, Swansea, and here,” Martin noted. “But if I lose my job at some point, at least I’ll know I stayed true to myself as a person and a manager. Changing my approach now that we’re in the Premier League wouldn’t make sense. I won’t stand by and watch something I don’t believe in.”

For Southampton to thrive, their players must embrace this mindset—showing bravery in tight situations, maintaining their passing game under pressure, and resisting the urge to let negative results affect their confidence.
