Sam George Slams Previous SIM Registration Process, Pledges a Smarter Approach
The Minister-Designate criticizes inefficiencies of past registration and promises a hassle-free, tech-enhanced solution
- Technology will streamline the process, eliminating the need for long queues
- SIM cards will be linked to the National ID database for efficient verification
- Only discrepancies will require visits to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs)
Sam Nartey George, the Minister-Designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, has vowed to launch a more efficient SIM card re-registration process to resolve the challenges faced during the previous initiative.
In 2022, Ghanaians were required to link their SIM cards with their Ghana Cards, but the process was marred by long queues and inefficiencies, leading to SIM blockages for non-compliance.
While appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, George criticized the former government’s handling of the registration, calling the long waiting times an unnecessary strain on citizens. He reassured that the new process would use technology to cross-reference data with the National Identification Authority (NIA) database, ensuring that no one will have to stand in long lines.
He also stated that there would be minimal in-person visits to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), with data discrepancies being the only reason for such visits.
George emphasized that the initiative would be in the best interest of both the public and the telecom companies, improving the accuracy of SIM card registrations without unnecessary delays.
