Story Highlights
  • Dr. Ayew Afriyie urges NPP to publicly release the 2024 election defeat report for transparency.
  • He believes openness will help rebuild trust and credibility with party members and the public.
  • Internal party dissatisfaction, including some supporters voting for the opposition

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership to publicly release the internal report analyzing the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections.

The report, prepared by a committee led by former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye, was designed to evaluate the party’s performance and pinpoint reasons behind its electoral defeat. Despite this, NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, confirmed the report would remain confidential for internal use only.

During an interview on June 10, Dr. Ayew Afriyie expressed disagreement with the leadership’s decision to withhold the findings.

He argued that making the report public would promote transparency and help restore confidence among party members and the general public.

“The national leadership claims they want to keep the details under wraps to avoid public ridicule while fixing the issues. I oppose that view. The report should be released to ‘heal the people.’ Losing an election invites criticism, but Ghanaians will understand and move on,” he stated.

Dr. Ayew Afriyie stressed that confronting the loss openly is essential for the party to regroup and regain credibility.

“Dive into the reasons behind the defeat. In two to three years, people will focus on the party’s positive actions, no matter the opposition’s jabs,” he advised.

He also highlighted internal discontent as a contributing factor, noting that research indicated roughly 20% to 25% of NPP supporters either voted for the opposition NDC or abstained from voting altogether.
