Angel Carbonu, President of the Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers (GNAT), has called on Education Minister-designate, Haruna Iddrisu, to prioritize the effective implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program in his upcoming tenure.

Following the nomination of the Member of Parliament for Tamale South as Education Minister by President John Dramani Mahama, Carbonu spoke out about the critical issues that need immediate attention in the country’s education sector.

In an interview, Carbonu emphasized the importance of engaging all relevant stakeholders and providing clear policies, particularly regarding Free SHS.

He stressed that ensuring the success of the Free SHS program should be the first focus for the new Education Minister, if confirmed.

“The immediate priority is the Free SHS program, which has been a major topic of discussion. The new government promised to engage stakeholders to reach a national consensus on how to move forward. We are eager for that consultation forum so we can contribute our input and play a role in the process,” Carbonu explained.

Additionally, Carbonu pointed out other longstanding issues within Ghana’s education sector, including infrastructure deficits, inadequate compensation for teachers, and declining standards in basic education due to neglect.

“The general challenges in education, such as infrastructure, teacher compensation, and the overall decline in basic education, are well known. These issues have persisted for years, and I hope the minister-designate will work towards addressing them,” he added.

Carbonu reiterated GNAT’s readiness to participate in discussions and contribute to finding solutions that will enhance the quality of education in Ghana.
