Pope Francis Beats Health Crisis, Returns to Vatican After Five-Week Hospital Stay

After five weeks in the hospital battling double pneumonia, the 88-year-old pontiff waves to well-wishers as he begins his road to recovery at the Vatican.

Pope Francis has returned to the Vatican after spending five weeks in the hospital battling double pneumonia, marking the most severe health challenge of his 12-year papacy.

The 88-year-old pontiff made his first public appearance since February 14 before being discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Sunday.

Escorted by police, his car made a brief stop at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, a cherished place of devotion for the pope.

Though back at the Vatican, doctors have advised at least two months of rest, limiting his engagements and leaving questions about his upcoming schedule.

Looking visibly weak yet smiling, Pope Francis greeted well-wishers outside the hospital, using a wheelchair as he has for years.

His face appeared swollen, with bandages visible beneath his cassock, and he spoke in a feeble voice to thank a devoted supporter who had visited him daily.

Despite ongoing recovery, the pope’s resilience remains evident as he transitions back to his duties, with Catholics worldwide praying for his full restoration.
