  • The session will address post-election matters

Parliament is set to reconvene today, December 16, 2024, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). This marks the legislature’s first meeting since the game-changing December 7 elections, which reshaped Ghana’s political landscape.

The session, announced through a circular from Speaker Alban Bagbin’s office on December 11, highlights the significance of this gathering amid a shifting political dynamic. Earlier, on December 2, Speaker Bagbin summoned members to prepare for this crucial sitting.

The 2024 elections delivered a significant victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), securing a majority in Parliament and unseating prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, including Ursula Owusu-Ekulful, Henry Quartey, and KT Hammond.

This electoral shift also saw John Dramani Mahama reclaim the presidency, defeating the NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Before the polls, Speaker Bagbin resisted calls from the Majority Caucus to recall Parliament for urgent matters, asserting that legislative activities would resume post-election. This decision stirred debate but paved the way for today’s critical session.

As Parliament reconvenes, key discussions will revolve around transitioning to the new administration, shaping legislative priorities, and addressing pressing national issues. All eyes are on Parliament as Ghana begins a new chapter in its governance.
