Pakistan has announced its intention to nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with playing a key diplomatic role in last month’s ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

In a post on X, the Pakistani government praised Trump’s “decisive diplomatic intervention” and “pivotal leadership,” saying his actions helped de-escalate a dangerous standoff between the two nuclear-armed nations.

Trump had previously claimed the U.S. facilitated the ceasefire through behind-the-scenes negotiations and economic pressure. “I told them, ‘Let’s stop this — we’re going to do a lot of trade together,’” Trump told reporters, suggesting trade ties were used as leverage.

While Pakistan supports the narrative of U.S. mediation, India has firmly denied that any third-party intervention occurred and insists it does not welcome outside involvement in its bilateral affairs.

In a statement on Saturday, Islamabad described Trump’s efforts as “a testament to his role as a genuine peacemaker,” lauding his strategic foresight and diplomacy.

There has been no official comment from the U.S. or Indian governments regarding Pakistan’s nomination.

Support for the move within Pakistan has been mixed. Senator Mushahid Hussain praised the decision, saying Trump has been favorable to Pakistani interests. “If this flatters his ego, that’s fine — European leaders have done worse,” he remarked.

In contrast, former Pakistani ambassador Maleeha Lodhi criticized the nomination, calling it “unfortunate” and saying Trump’s support for Israel’s military actions has damaged his credibility as a peace advocate. “It compromises our national dignity,” she posted on X.

Despite frequent claims of orchestrating global peace deals, Trump has yet to secure a formal resolution in ongoing conflicts such as Russia-Ukraine or Israel-Gaza. Still, he has often lamented being overlooked by the Nobel Committee, particularly when compared to former President Barack Obama, whose 2009 Peace Prize Trump has repeatedly questioned.
