Over 380 Diplomatic Passports Returned Following Presidential Recall Directive
Effort to Strengthen Accountability and Prevent Misuse of Sensitive State Documents
- 380+ diplomatic and service passports returned as part of a presidential recall
- The recall, targeting passports issued under the previous NPP government, ended on January 24, 2025
- Initiative aims to ensure passports are used only for official state duties abroad
Over 380 diplomatic passports have been returned following a presidential recall order aimed at strengthening accountability and oversight.
Issued by Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President, the directive called for the return of all diplomatic and service passports distributed under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
The recall officially ended on Friday, January 24, 2025.
Sources within the Ministry confirmed that most passports were handed in by Thursday, January 23, one day before the deadline.
This move is part of the government’s effort to ensure that these sensitive documents are used solely for their intended purpose facilitating official state duties abroad.
Diplomatic passports offer privileges such as faster customs processing and tax exemptions, but their mismanagement could endanger national security and international relations.
The recall follows reports of misuse, with individuals who no longer hold official positions still in possession of these passports. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has committed to enforcing stricter controls to prevent further misuse in the future.
