President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled an ambitious irrigation project aimed at transforming agriculture and livelihoods across Northern Ghana.

Under the Northern Savannah Economic Transformation Programme (NSETP), more than 100,000 hectares of irrigated farmland will be developed in Nasia, Dungu, and Bohulu.

Speaking during a courtesy visit from the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, at the Jubilee House on Friday, June 13, Mahama revealed that the initiative will generate sustainable employment for over 8,000 young farmers while significantly boosting the cultivation of rice, maize, and soya beans.

“This initiative will revitalise our region’s agricultural potential and stimulate rural economies,” the President emphasized. He noted that the broader plan includes transforming the Northern Region into an agro-industrial powerhouse, with towns such as Yendi, Savelugu, and Salaga selected for agro-processing infrastructure.

Further plans include scaling up shea and cashew production by expanding processing centres in Tamale and strengthening market links in Torlon and Sabzirigu—moves designed to empower thousands of rural women and enhance income stability through traditional value chains.

The Overlord’s visit highlighted the importance of government-traditional authority partnerships in advancing inclusive local development and national unity.
