Over 1,000 Killed in Road Crashes Between January and April – NRSA
Authority urges urgent reforms as accidents surge across the country

- Over 1,000 people killed and 5,591 injured in 4,700+ road crashes from January to April 2025
- NRSA reports increases in injuries (+13%), pedestrian knockdowns (+7%), and collisions (+6%)
- Billboards on road medians to be removed
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has reported a grim toll on Ghana’s roads, with more than 1,000 lives lost and 5,591 injuries from over 4,700 accidents between January and April this year.
This alarming update was shared during a recent stakeholder meeting with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), following a previously postponed session on May 29.
In a detailed presentation, NRSA Principal Manager Dennis Yirebu pointed out a troubling rise in road safety incidents compared to previous periods:
-
13% increase in injuries
-
7% rise in pedestrian knockdowns
-
6% uptick in collisions
He attributed part of the problem to the scarcity of proper road signs, which continues to hamper safe driving.
To combat this, the NRSA has ordered MMDAs in the Greater Accra Region to remove billboards from road medians, citing their interference with driver visibility as a major hazard. Director-General Abraham Amaliba emphasized this is not a blanket ban, but a focused safety measure.
Additionally, all assemblies have been instructed to form and activate Road Safety Committees to strengthen local enforcement and ensure the full implementation of the NRSA Act and its regulations.
