President John Dramani Mahama has strongly denounced the recent resurgence of violence in Bawku and reaffirmed his trust in the peace-building efforts led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as the surest path to lasting calm in the area.

Speaking at the Ghana Military Academy’s Graduation Parade on Friday, April 11, 2025, President Mahama addressed the volatile situation, which escalated on April 10 with clashes between police and local youth—an incident that allegedly led to casualties and injuries. Reports also indicate that the private home of MP Mahama Ayariga was set on fire during the unrest.

President Mahama highlighted the critical role the Ghana Armed Forces play in managing national threats, noting that Bawku remains one of the country’s most challenging hotspots. He stressed that the violence benefits no one and urged an end to the hostilities.

He expressed optimism about the mediation process being spearheaded by the Asantehene, emphasizing that it unites all relevant parties in a shared pursuit of peace. He revealed that Otumfuo’s efforts are set to resume next week upon his return from an international engagement.

Reinforcing his administration’s stance on law and order, Mahama assured the public that all criminal acts connected to the Bawku conflict will be thoroughly investigated. He cautioned against distractions, stating that his government would not engage in “games of smoke and mirrors” but would instead remain focused on real solutions.
