Only Rice Available to Feed Students; Accra SHS Will Have No Food by January 13 – CHASS

CHASS Chairman Paul Amoasi Baidoo calls for urgent intervention as food shortages threaten the well-being of students in Greater Accra schools

Story Highlights
  • Accra SHS are relying solely on rice for student meals, with no other food supplies available
  • Without immediate action, students may go hungry as rice stocks are set to run out by January 13, 2025
  • CHASS urges parents to help feed their children due to ongoing financial challenges faced by school

The Chairman of the Greater Accra Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Paul Amoasi Baidoo, has raised serious concerns about the severe food shortage affecting Senior High Schools (SHS) in the region.

He revealed that rice is currently the only food available to feed students, but it will not be enough to sustain them in the coming days. The region is also lacking other essential food items like maize and beans.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Amoasi expressed that he had communicated the schools’ needs, including unpaid bursaries, to the regional CHASS director for swift action. Despite this, the national leadership of CHASS had previously requested that the government delay the reopening of schools until January 3, 2025, but their plea was denied.

Amoasi, who is also the Headmaster of St. Thomas Aquinas SHS, explained that his school, a day school, only serves hot meals to students.

In contrast, boarding schools like Labone SHS and Accra Girls SHS are providing rice for all meals. The situation is increasingly dire, and without a solution by Monday, January 13, 2025, there will be no food to serve the students.

He echoed the National CHASS leadership’s call for parents to step in and support the feeding of their children in school. Meanwhile, a communiqué issued by CHASS highlighted the financial struggles faced by schools, despite earlier assurances from the government.

The Ghana Education Service confirmed the reopening dates for SHS students on January 3, 2025, and for Primary and Junior High Schools on January 8, 2025. They assured the public that discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Education to resolve the food crisis.
