A tragic incident on River Okye near Okyiso in Assin South District has left one child dead and four others hospitalized after a canoe carrying five children capsized.
The victim, 12-year-old Kojo Adu, was confirmed dead upon arrival at the clinic, while the remaining children—ranging in age from 6 to 12—are fighting for their lives.
The group, consisting of three siblings, a friend, and the canoe’s paddler, had been traveling toward Amoanda in search of pears, navigating a perilous route across the river.
The cause of the capsizing remains unclear, but local residents of Assin Okyiso quickly responded, rescuing four children. Sadly, Kojo’s body was later found submerged in the river.
In the wake of this tragedy, the parents of the deceased have voiced their heartbreak, while the local communities are urgently calling on government officials, including Rev. Ntim Fordjour and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to build a footbridge over the Okyi River to prevent such incidents in the future.
