NPP’s Best Bet for the 2028 Election Is Dr. Bawumia – Maurice Ampaw

Legal Expert Warns Against Kennedy Agyapong’s Candidacy, Says Bawumia Deserves a Second Chance

Story Highlights
  • Bawumia’s 2024 loss was due to Akufo-Addo’s baggage, not his own failures.
  • Internal NPP conflicts, especially Kennedy Agyapong’s attacks, hurt Bawumia’s campaign.
  • Ampaw warns that choosing Agyapong in 2028 could keep NPP in opposition

Renowned private legal practitioner, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, has advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to present Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their flagbearer in the 2028 general elections if they are determined to regain power.

According to Maurice Ampaw, Dr. Bawumia inherited the challenges and unpopularity of former President Akufo-Addo, which contributed to his defeat in the 2024 election.

In an interview on Lawson TV/Radio Ghana’s Se Sen Morning Show, he lamented that the NPP failed to project Dr. Bawumia in a positive light. He added that the party damaged his image during the presidential primaries, and there was a strong desire for change among voters.

“Somebody like Kennedy Agyapong tarnished Bawumia’s image during the primaries, and this made the NDC more popular. Meanwhile, all the NDC did was make promises,” he stated.

Maurice Ampaw further argued that the 42% of votes Bawumia secured came mostly from floating voters, as many NPP supporters did not turn out to vote.

He also pointed out that President John Mahama only gained an additional 100,000 votes compared to his 2020 election performance.

“Bawumia is not politically smart. Even though it was his first attempt, he still secured 42% of the vote. This means people believed in his vision, yet NPP members did not vote for him,” he emphasized.

However, he warned that if the NPP wants to remain in opposition, they should present Kennedy Agyapong as their candidate for the 2028 election.

According to him, Kennedy Agyapong would struggle in the election despite his popularity.

He stated, “Kennedy Agyapong is popular, but will that popularity translate into votes from NPP members?”

Maurice Ampaw also criticized Kennedy Agyapong, questioning his sincerity towards Dr. Bawumia. “If Kennedy Agyapong truly supports Bawumia, why doesn’t he give him a second chance to contest the presidential election?”

He further alleged that Kennedy Agyapong’s support for Bawumia during the 2024 election campaign was insincere and ultimately damaging.
