The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken aim at Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, accusing him of partisanship during parliamentary sessions on October 23, 2024.
In a statement, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah urged Bagbin to adopt a neutral stance in parliamentary matters, emphasizing that the constitution requires the Speaker to act as an impartial referee, rather than favoring one side.
Koduah warned that Bagbin’s extreme partisanship could jeopardize the foundations of Ghana’s democracy. He reminded Bagbin of his constitutional duty to uphold neutrality and respect the supremacy of the constitution, which grants him authority.
“His actions must reflect that he is not an MP and that the Supreme Court is the sole body empowered to interpret constitutional matters,” Koduah stated, following Bagbin’s recent indefinite suspension of Parliament amid ongoing disputes over Majority and Minority seats.
