Top figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are gearing up to pay a visit to President John Mahama in a bid to seek forgiveness for Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
This move was revealed by Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, during an interview.
While the exact timing and makeup of the delegation remain under wraps, Dr. Afriyie confirmed that the plan has Wontumi’s blessing.
“I had a conversation with Wontumi and proposed that we go and apologise—he agreed without hesitation. We’re prepared to go to President Mahama and humbly ask for leniency,” Dr. Afriyie stated.
Chairman Wontumi is currently facing scrutiny from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over allegations of financial misconduct, including fraud and money laundering. The Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem-Sai, has even suggested a potential link to an international crime ring.
Wontumi was detained by EOCO for nearly six days following his arrest on May 27, 2025. After several failed attempts to secure his release, he was finally granted bail on June 2, 2025, on conditions including GH₵50 million and two justified sureties.
