The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fiercely rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun the parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, calling the move baseless and made without consensus.

In an interview following the EC’s July 2 announcement, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed asserted that no agreement was reached between the EC and political parties to support a rerun.

“Our representatives were present at the meeting, and I must emphasize that there was absolutely no agreement with the EC on this,” he stated. “Even the EC’s own press release admits that the parties did not consent.”

The EC cited a lack of verification on scanned Pink Sheets by Presiding Officers as the reason for the rerun, noting that the original documents were destroyed after a mob stormed the collation center.

However, the NPP argues that results from just three polling stations are pending and sufficient to complete the collation.

“We’re baffled by the EC’s decision,” Mohammed said. “The NPP will not back down. We don’t recognize any rerun—we insist the EC must finish the collation using the remaining three polling station results.”

He further emphasized the need for enhanced security during the collation process, rather than re-conducting elections in areas where party agents had already endorsed the outcomes.
