Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has unveiled plans to establish local industries for the production of dialysis consumables and reagents in Ghana.
This initiative aims to reduce the high costs of kidney disease treatment.
Dr. Prempeh revealed that the government is in discussions with manufacturers of dialysis supplies to explore potential collaborations.
He made the announcement during a visit to the renal department at the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti Region.
Highlighting the NPP government’s dedication to improving healthcare, Dr. Prempeh pointed to the ongoing Agenda 111 project, which is constructing 111 hospitals across the country.
He also noted that the government intends to utilize the African Continental Free Trade Area to establish top-tier industries for producing dialysis consumables.
This announcement follows the recent introduction of free dialysis treatment for renal patients, which began on December 1, 2024.
