Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has voiced his astonishment and disappointment following the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary elections.
He revealed that the party had provided unprecedented support to its candidates, but despite these efforts, the results were still a shock.
Kodua, in an interview shared his disbelief, stating, “We are still in disbelief; the election outcome has left us stunned.”
He acknowledged that past mistakes, such as the imposition of certain candidates on constituencies in previous elections, were lessons the party sought to address in the 2023/2024 primaries.
Kodua emphasized that the party conducted one of its most transparent and efficient parliamentary primaries ever, allowing constituencies the freedom to choose their candidates.
In a bid to ensure transparency, the NPP established an album validation committee to avoid misunderstandings and ensure fairness during the primaries.
Despite these efforts, Kodua admitted his shock at the party’s loss of seats, revealing that he had refrained from giving media interviews after the election, as he struggled to make sense of the significant defeat.
Kodua remains optimistic about the committee led by Prof. Mike Oquaye, which will investigate the factors contributing to the party’s poor performance.
He highlighted the widespread apathy within the party as a significant factor impacting both presidential and parliamentary results.
The 2024 parliamentary elections resulted in a dramatic shift in the balance of power. The NDC now holds 183 seats, while the NPP is left with only 88 seats and four independent MPs. One parliamentary seat remains unresolved as the Electoral Commission works to address an outstanding dispute.
