Former Vice President and NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and other security bodies to respect the constitutional rights of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his arrest and ongoing detention.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia voiced concern about the indefinite detention of the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, highlighting the absence of clear charges and uncertainty about his current status.
He stressed that while no one is above the law in a democratic society, no citizen—irrespective of political standing—should be deprived of their fundamental rights. He emphasized that justice and due process are essential pillars of democracy.
Dr. Bawumia also revealed ongoing communication with Wontumi’s legal team to ensure his rights are safeguarded and praised their dedication and professionalism.
He cautioned that neglecting proper legal procedures could erode public confidence in the justice system and reminded that Ghana’s strength lies in a rule-based system where institutions act fairly and firmly, not arbitrarily.
