No Ban on Small-Scale Mining – PMMC Boss Sammy Gyamfi Assures
PMMC Boss assures miners of government support through concessions, training, and logistics while urging them to sell gold through the upcoming GoldBod initiative.

- overnment will not prohibit small-scale mining but will regulate it
- Licensed miners will receive concessions, training, and logistical aid
- Miners must sell gold to licensed buyers under the new government-backed system
The government has no plans to ban small-scale mining but will instead support miners who operate legally and responsibly, according to Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Bolgatanga on March 26, 2025, Gyamfi assured miners in the Upper East and North East Regions that those with the necessary legal documentation would receive government support. This includes access to mining concessions, skills training, and logistical resources to enhance responsible mining practices.
He emphasized that all mined gold should be sold to the government through the soon-to-be-established GoldBod initiative. This move aims to ensure that gold sales benefit the nation’s economy rather than unauthorized foreign or local buyers.
“We are making the licensing process more accessible at the district level, designating specific mining zones to promote responsible production. After mining, ensure that your gold is sold to a licensed Ghanaian buyer under GoldBod, as these individuals are authorized to purchase gold on behalf of the government,” Gyamfi explained.
