Brazilian forward Neymar described the emotional experience of playing for Santos again after a 12-year absence as “indescribable.”

The 33-year-old made his return to the Brazilian club on January 31, following a stint with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.

His departure from Santos in 2013 marked the beginning of his European journey with Barcelona.

In his first match back, Neymar entered the field at halftime, with Santos leading 1-0. Despite his recent injury, Neymar made an impact in the second half, helping his team fight off a resilient Botafogo side that earned a 1-1 draw at Estadio Vila Belmiro.

“I love Santos,” Neymar said after the game. “I can’t put into words what I felt stepping back onto this pitch. I need more minutes, more games. I’m not at 100% yet. I didn’t expect to run and dribble so much today. I believe I’ll feel better in four or five games.”

After the match, several Botafogo players and staff approached Neymar for photos, showing respect for the former Brazil captain.

Neymar’s career with Santos began his rise to stardom, with the Brazilian club marking a milestone in his journey. During his first spell at the club, he won six major trophies, including the 2011 Copa Libertadores, and scored 136 goals in 225 appearances by the time he left at age 21.

Following his departure, Neymar became the world’s most expensive player in 2017 when he moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for a record £200m. However, his time at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia was marred by a serious knee injury in 2022, limiting him to just seven appearances.

Santos, the legendary club once home to Pele, faced a historic setback in 2023 when they were relegated for the first time in their 111-year history. However, the team bounced back, securing promotion to Brazil’s top division after winning Serie B last season.
