Lawrencia Naa Borley Nelson, known as Naa Gamu, the newly enskinned Queen of the Ga-Adangme Muslim Union (Nungua West), has tragically died after being shot during her enskinment ceremony in Nungua, Accra.

The incident took place on Saturday when a musket shot fired during the ceremony struck her in the thigh.

Naa Gamu, along with her husband, was being enskinned as the queen and chief of the Nungua West branch of the Ga-Adangme Muslim Union at the time.

While the exact motive behind the shooting remains unclear, the family has confirmed that a suspect has been arrested as investigations continue.

Relatives are expressing suspicion about the circumstances surrounding the incident, with many questioning whether it was a deliberate act.

Her uncle, Martison Quaye raised concerns about the shooting, particularly questioning the nature of the musketry used during such ceremonies. “Isn’t gunpowder supposed to be used, and isn’t the gun meant to be fired into the sky? Why was she shot in the thigh?” he asked.

Naa Gamu’s brother, Nii Bortey Agbli, criticized the delay in medical care, which he believes contributed to her death. He recounted how the family was turned away from a local facility without receiving first aid and how they were then referred to Ridge Hospital, where doctors confirmed her death after removing the bullet and treating the wound.

The shooting has left the Nungua community in shock and mourning, with many calling for stricter security measures at traditional ceremonies. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
