NDC’s Majority in 22 Hours Signals Failure for 24-Hour Economy Policy – Obiri Boahen Teases
Lawyer Obiri Boahen Calls Out NDC's Hasty Celebrations Amid Legal Uncertainty
- NDC leaders celebrated their brief majority in Parliament after the Speaker's announcement.
- The Supreme Court quickly issued a stay on the Speaker’s ruling
- Lawyer Obiri Boahen warns that this fleeting majority reflects poorly on the NDC’s economic proposals
Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen has taken a jab at former President John Mahama and the NDC’s flagbearer for celebrating prematurely during their campaign following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration that four parliamentary seats were vacant.
This declaration, made on October 17, was based on the fact that the current occupants had defected to run in the upcoming elections under different party banners.
However, just a day later, the Supreme Court of Ghana issued a stay of execution on Bagbin’s ruling after Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin swiftly sought legal clarification regarding the status of the four MPs who planned to contest the December 2024 elections as either NPP members or independents.
In an interview, Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen mocked the NDC for briefly holding a majority for just 22 hours.
He suggested that this bodes poorly for NDC’s proposed 24-hour economy policy.
“If you’re not careful with your words, you’ll end up insulting Mahama. He was in the middle of a campaign when he heard the announcement that the NDC was now the majority in Parliament and began to celebrate. But the NDC held that majority for only 22 hours, not even a full 24,” he joked.
