The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has issued a directive to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately reassign all regional, divisional, and district police commanders stationed in mining areas.
This move aims to replace long-serving officers who have failed to curb illegal mining activities.
Under the new policy, affected commanders will be transferred to non-mining areas, while their successors will undergo a three-month probationary period to demonstrate their effectiveness.
Those who fail to deliver results will also face reassignment.
Speaking at a meeting with Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, Alhaji Muntaka emphasized his unwavering commitment to the directive, despite mounting pressure on the IGP to reconsider.
“We will keep making changes until we see results,” he stated, reinforcing the government’s determination to strengthen law enforcement and tackle the ongoing environmental threat posed by illegal mining.
