MTN, Telecel Get More Spectrum; Poor Service Could Lead to Fines – Sam George
Minister warns operators to improve service quality within three months or face penalties

- MTN and Telecel receive extra spectrum to improve service quality across Ghana.
- NCA will monitor operators closely, enforcing penalties for poor service
- Telecom providers must enhance service quality within three months to avoid fines.
Sam George, Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has announced a series of actions to improve telecommunications services in the country.
During a press briefing on April 9, he addressed the widespread dissatisfaction with the service quality of mobile network operators.
“I’ve received numerous complaints regarding the service quality from nearly all the network providers,” he said.
In response, the Minister confirmed that technology neutrality for MTN Ghana has been approved, alongside additional spectrum being allocated to both MTN and Telecel Ghana by the National Communications Authority (NCA).
“This decision will equip telecom operators with more resources to enhance their service delivery,” Sam George noted.
He also warned service providers that the NCA would be closely monitoring their progress, and any failure to improve quality would lead to substantial fines.
“I would like to remind all providers that within three months of receiving the additional spectrum, the NCA will rigorously enforce quality standards. Failure to comply will result in significant penalties,” he cautioned.
