Kwame Opoku became the hero for Asante Kotoko, scoring a dramatic 93rd-minute goal to secure a 2-1 victory over True Democracy and seal their place in the semifinals of the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup.
The Porcupine Warriors showcased their resilience in a match full of twists, setting up an exciting semifinal clash with Berekum Chelsea.
Kotoko took the lead early in the 13th minute when Saaka Dauda pounced on a quick throw-in and calmly slotted the ball past True Democracy’s goalkeeper.
Although they had the upper hand, Kotoko missed a golden opportunity to extend their lead midway through the first half. After Kwame Opoku was fouled inside the box, Justice Blay stepped up to take the penalty, but his shot cannoned off the post, leaving True Democracy with a glimmer of hope.
That miss proved costly in the 62nd minute when True Democracy equalized. Isaac Botchway’s well-executed free-kick took a deflection off the Kotoko wall, wrong-footing goalkeeper Mohammed Camara and sparking jubilation from the underdogs’ supporters.
With the momentum shifting, the game seemed destined for penalties as both sides fought fiercely in the final stages. However, Kwame Opoku had other plans. In the third minute of stoppage time, he seized a late chance and fired home the decisive goal, setting off wild celebrations among Kotoko fans.
The 2-1 victory highlighted the team’s never-say-die attitude and kept their FA Cup aspirations alive.
Asante Kotoko will now focus on their upcoming semifinal clash with Berekum Chelsea, with the winner set to face either Attram De Visser or Golden Kick in the final as the race for the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup title intensifies.
