Local Governance Expert Kwadwo Adjei Darko has condemned the practice of allocating a portion of the District Assembly Common Fund to Members of Parliament (MPs), calling it an act of “refining corruption.”

Speaking on the Lawson TV/Radio’s Ghana Se Sen Morning Show, Adjei Darko emphasized that such a practice is not only unconstitutional but also serves to deepen corruption by making it more institutionalized and difficult to detect.

He argued that there is no legal basis for MPs to benefit from the fund, which is meant for district development, and called for greater accountability in how public funds are allocated.

According to Adjei Darko, this practice undermines the core principles of governance, as MPs, who are ex-officio members, do not have a legitimate claim to these funds.

He stressed that the focus should instead be on empowering Assembly Members at the local level, who play a more significant role in district development.

He also expressed concern over the lack of oversight in how MPs use these funds, suggesting that it contributes to the further entrenchment of corrupt practices in the political system.
