- Mpiani warns that relying on courts could disrupt the functioning of Parliament and hinder its effectiveness
Kwadwo Mpiani, former Chief of Staff under President J.A. Kufuor, has called on Parliament to handle its internal issues without resorting to court injunctions.
His comments followed Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s recent move to challenge Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Afenyo-Markin, declaring the Speaker’s action unconstitutional in a 5-2 decision.
Mpiani cautioned that relying on courts for internal parliamentary matters could hinder the legislative process.
He urged MPs to settle differences through dialogue and consensus, which could have avoided the current standoff.
He also emphasized that Speaker Bagbin should respect the Supreme Court’s ruling and encouraged Parliament to focus on constructive discussions to ensure stability.
During an interview on November 13, Mpiani stressed, “If Parliament continues to seek court intervention, it could make its work more difficult, setting a dangerous precedent for future decisions.”
