Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has ordered the immediate closure of a major bridge in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region, citing its dangerously deteriorated condition.
The bridge, a vital link for farmers transporting produce from Kotokuom and nearby areas, has suffered extensive damage due to heavy-duty truck usage. Metal beams have weakened, deep cracks have formed on the surface, and sections of the structure are breaking apart, posing a severe risk to motorists.
Frustrated residents, after multiple ignored pleas for repairs, turned to social media to highlight the bridge’s hazardous state. Their efforts caught the attention of President John Dramani Mahama, who promptly directed the Roads and Highways Minister to visit the site and take urgent action.
Following an inspection with ministry engineers, Agbodza announced that contractors have been assigned to commence immediate repairs. In the meantime, the Ashanti Regional Security Council has urged motorists to use alternative routes until the bridge is fully restored.
